Our Diaper Rash Journey with Desitin

As parents we have a million things going through our heads at all times.

did I change the load in the wash

what is for dinner tonight

do I have those groceries to make that

I hope I am going to have time to get Ryan to her doctor appointment without waking her from her nap

did Olivia eat enough for breakfast and was it even healthy

Lets be honest do our minds ever stop- I know mine doesn’t.  I went and got a massage the other day and the entire time I was thinking about a million things.  I couldn’t even relax.

I know I don’t have it bad compared to some but between dealing with Ryan’s acid reflux and than adding her plagiocephaly & torticollis into the mix I feel like we are always on the go.  The last thing that I want to have to deal with is a diaper rash.

When Ryan was about a month old she started getting really bad diaper rashes & was upset all the time- the only thing that would calm her down was to nurse her but that only lasted a few minutes and than she would arch and scream.  Come to find out she was reacting to all the dairy that I was eating (which I live off of my dairy) and she had acid reflux.  One thing that really helped during this time was Desitin Rapid Relief.

Every now and then we still deal with diaper rash but it is nothing compared to those earlier days.  I also know that we are staying on top of it to help prevent it from happening.  If you are dealing with diaper rash right now Desitin shares some of their secrets how to deal with it here as well as how to prevent it from happening here.  We love using the Desitin Rapid Relief but I also recommend trying their Desitin Maximum Strength Original paste.  Have you tried Desitin? What are some secrets to keeping your little ones bum from turning red?

Chores For My Toddler

Chores are an excellent way to teach children responsibility as well as being a part of the family and contributing.  One thing I have noticed with children is the desire to help out so I knew I wanted to teach her things while she still had this desire.  We started some of these chores around the age of 1 but thought I would write a list of a few chores we have her do and most 2 year olds are capable of doing.

2 Year Old Chore List

  1. Wipe up spills
We started this early- around 1 1/2 years old- every time she would spill something on the floor I would give her something to help wipe it up- sometimes she would go into the drawer and get a towel herself as well to help clean it up.  She doesn’t always do the best job and I often have to go after her and finish cleaning it up but I love that she knows that if something spills she needs to clean it up.
  2. Pick up her toys & books
This task isn’t always easy- she gets distracted very easily when picking up her toys and will sit down and start playing.  I probably end up cleaning most of the toys up but I do like knowing that she can do it.  There are times that I tell her I will not help to pick them up and make her do them herself.  I think it is good to teach them that you are not there to serve their every desire.  If they make a mess it is their responsibility to clean it up.
  3. Make her bed
Thanks to Beddys bedding this is an easy task.  I think a made bed makes the room but how hard would it be for a 2 year old to always make that bed when I can’t even seem to make my own all the time- thanks to the zipper feature she is able to zip her bed made and she loves doing it as well.
  4. Brush her teeth
I am a dental hygienist so this one is extremely important to me and I love that she wants to do it.  Obviously I go in and do it as well but I love that she wants to brush them herself.  It will create a healthy habit for when she is a teenager and older.
  5. Throw away her garbage
Another task that she has loved since a young age.  She often asks to throw away our garbage.  I wanted to teach her to not leave her trash everywhere for me to find.  Outside I do not allow her to leave her garbage all over the yard either.  There are times that we eat outside and she will get distracted and want to run off and play but I still make her throw things away.  Hoping it will help to prevent littering in the future as well
  6. Feed the cats
This chore more came about from her begging to do it.  We help her with this task and measure out the amount the cats need but she goes and puts it in their bowls.  She often goes and calls for the cats to come to dinner as well if they aren’t already up in the kitchen begging for it.

Olivia is obsessed with eating outside.  She will always go and get our blanket and say picnic outside.  It is adorable and I hope she continues to want to hang out with me all the time.  It got me thinking though of some things that are essential to have a great picnic and thought I would gather some of our favorite products.

Picnic Essentials

  1. A great blanket
We are obsessed with our Gathre mat and I highly recommend investing in a good quality blanket for any occasion.  This mat gets brought out on a daily and during the winter we use it for indoor picnic as well.  I love that it is waterproof so if the grass is wet we don’t get wet and you are able to wipe off anything easily that is spilt.  Lets be honest we are eating with kids- there is going to be a lot that gets spilt.  Olivia has gotten lasagna all over this mat and it never stained- just wiped right up.
  2. A picnic basket
We have one similar to this one– that I got from my parents house- it helps to have all of your stuff together in one spot.  Plus I think it is adorable to have a picnic basket.
  3. Umbrella
We bought a budget friendly $20 one from Target in their seasonal area and we use it all the time- there are often times we can’t find shade so its nice to have this to protect us some.
  4. Portable speakers
We are a family that loves to always have music playing.  Olivia also loves to dance so it helps to entertain her while the rest of us are still snacking.  We have a small bluetooth one that we got from Amazon.
  5. Easy Nutritious Food
Obviously a picnic wouldn’t be complete without the food.  I like to keep it simple when going on a picnic so that I am not juggling a lot of things and makes clean up easy as well.  I still want the food to be nutritious for us.  That is what I love about the Papa Johns ne w gluten-free crust pizza.  They use ancient grains making this a healthier option than your regular pizza.  Whenever I am breastfeeding I try to be a little more health conscience than I normally am.  I am also the mom that gives my child fruit & veggies while I am hiding eating fast food.  I like that I don’t have to hide while eating this meal.  Try it out tonight with this PROMO CODE for a small 2-Topping Gluten-Free Crust Pizza $9.99 : GLTN2T

How To.. Heatless Curls with Savvy Curls

Savvy Curls, heatless curls, easy heatless curls, no heat curls, tutorial, how to curl hair

How to curl your hair easily without heat. These are all things I love to hear.

If you know me at all you know I am hair & makeup challenged. I have always been somewhat of a Tomboy growing up, having 3 older brothers right above me.  My mom was never into hair and makeup so my sister and I weren’t really taught much in that department.  When I use to curl my hair it would honestly take me hours and it still didn’t look good. I don’t know why it has always been so difficult for me. I’m thinking I must not be the only one though with so many curling hair tutorials and how to’s on youtube. (let’s hope I’m not the only one).

Since I am beauty challenged and a new mom the top knot has been my hairstyle for more than a year now.  I’ve been wanting to change this so I have attempted tying socks on my head (flashbacks to pink curlers at night), the sock bun, twisting my hair & braids.  Nothing was working and then I found Savvy Curls.

So what is Savvy Curls?

It’s a “heat insulating material & curl forming material” that uses the heat from our scalp to produce beautiful curls.

How to use Savvy Curls:

They have instructions inside the package but I am more of a visual person so I watched their tutorials on their website.

I washed my hair & let it air dry for a couple of hours, my hair is pretty thick. After it was dry I applied mouse all over my head.  I put the savvy curls on top of my hair.

I then wrapped my hair in about 1 inch sections around the Savvy Curl and pulled through.  Once pulled through I combined that piece with about an inch more of hair and continued to wrap about the Savvy Curl.

Once you get to the end you leave out the last piece after wrapped once.  You move onto the other side and repeat.  Once you reach the end of that side you will combined the two ends and wrap until all wrapped around the Savvy Curler. You will then  hold the ends with bobby pins.

After a few hours of wearing, sleeping, or a whole day of wearing for a night out you will untwist your curls.

This is what it looked like after several hours of wearing around and taking a nap in it. Hey a mamas got to rest when the baby does.

Easy curls without damaging my hair.  One bonus of never being able to do my hair growing up is my stylists always compliment me on my gorgeous healthy hair. Now I can style my hair and still keep the healthy locks.
